What Is a Grape Variety?

A grape variety is a type of grapevine. Around 10,000 grape varieties have been identified worldwide.
Each one produces wines with its own unique aromas, flavors, color and character.
Some wine regions are renowned for a single grape variety, such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in Burgundy, Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in the Loire Valley, Gamay in Beaujolais, Syrah, Grenache and Viognier in the Rhône Valley, or Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon in Bordeaux.
