The grape varieties
A grape variety (cépage) is a type of grape. Around 10,000 varieties are identified worldwide, each producing wines with different characteristics: aromas, flavors, colors…
Some regions have built their reputation around a single iconic grape variety, such as:
-
Burgundy, with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay;
-
the Loire Valley, with Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc;
-
Beaujolais, known for Gamay;
-
the Rhône Valley, with Syrah, Grenache, and Viognier;
-
Bordeaux, famous for Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
